Hunky Aristocrats in exotic locations mounted on thoroughbreds grasping that ubiquitous polo mallet maneuvering across the manicured grass…. That is unless of course you are at the Taj Jai Mahal Palace in Jaipur, in which case, you’re in for a little bit of a surprise! Welcome to the world of elephant polo. I know, sounds awesome right? Well, we thought so too. This little known sport [which has been around for twenty five years!] is how we think polo should be played! The basics are pretty similar. Polo ball, check! Polo mallet [albeit quite a bit longer!], check! The pitch though is about 25% shorter than a standard polo field due to the much slower speed of the elephants, there are two 10- minute chukkas and two people get to ride the elephant – yes, two. As chief tactical strategist and mallet handler, you will have the use of a trusty mahout, whose job it is to basically ‘drive’ your elephant according to your directions. The only thing we felt was missing was someone sitting behind us, holding our cocktails and fanning us during all that hard work. What? There’s always room for improvement!
