Is green the new black?

Is Green the new Black?
Is it time to care what you wear? This question doesn’t refer to the latest must have labels, but more importantly the question of whether is it time to focus on being fashionable and eco-conscious at the same time? Can the fashion industry really make an impact on the environment by turning green into the new black?
Some fashion houses and designers have already made the move towards green by offering pieces created from exciting alternative materials such as organically grown cotton and bamboo, and supporting sustainable labor practices (just as important for that guilt free must have dress for this season!) But to be fashion conscious and world conscious doesn’t mean you can’t frequent your usual stores. Remember this is not a fad, just an alternative choice.
Stores backing the green include Next who carry a range or organic clothing which includes jeans, underwear and nightwear. Dorothy Perkins have a range of organic t-shirts. Miss Selfridges and Top Shops vintage sections offer second hand clothing which falls in line with the green philosophy. There are other countless stores and online outlets that offer organic cotton, hemp, wool and felt items as well as hemp boots and jackets. The quality of these materials and the calibre of the designers utilising them affords us all the opportunity to have a green wardrobe without having to compromise on style (as much as we all like to be eco-conscious let’s face it, we don’t all want to wear baggy multi coloured tents that plead our silky hair into overnight dreadlocks!)
So the next time you need that basic white t-shirt, skin tight jeans or little black dress, why not spend that extra second to search the labels for the greener option? You won’t only feel the buzz of the purchase but also the inner warmth of knowing you have, in your own small way, done your bit to help.
